The phrases 'vegan' and plant-based have been used interchangeably, but there is a subtle difference, we want to be clear whether the foods are truly vegan.
Grain free
Grains are one of the top five allergens for dogs. Dogs allergies can be visible or invisible, mild or severe - no matter what, we want to try to minimise the amount of allergens fed to dogs
Soya free
Not just an allergen but also key crop named as a cause of the destruction of rainforest. Soya lacks provencne information, so if your dog food contains it, it is likely to be a negative for both your dog and the planet.
Publishes provenance information
Not all carrots (and other ingredients!) are born equal. If you care about what they eat, you should also care about how it is grown. If your dog food manufacturer doesn't publish the information, it probably means they don't know, or care.
Publishes invitro digestibility score
Invitro digestibility is when a dog's digestive system is replicated in a lab and used to check how digestible the food is. The higher the digestibility, the better. Again, if your dog's food provider doesn't publish this information, it probably either means that they don't care to know or they do know and they don't want you finding out!
Free from investors involved in the meat trade
If you're buying vegan dog food on animal cruelty grounds, you probably don't want your money lining the pockets of people who are involved in the death of animals (directly or indirectly)
Vegan founders
People often want to align their values with the owners of the companies they buy from. Buying vegan dog food from vegan founders would seem to make sense.
100% Family owned
Knowing that the owners of a business are the founders of the business is a good start in a world obsessed with maximising profit. This often means reducing production costs and, therefore, quality. The more of a business is owned by financial investors, the more cause for concern.

A vet is a good start. While they have very little, if any, canine nutrition training, some know a great deal. A canine nutritionist is a must. They have had formal training in understanding what a dog needs and how dog food can deliver it.
